Rungwa Ikili Game Reserve, central Tanzania
This game-rich area is located on the north side of Ruaha National Park in central Tanzania. Like the Selous, the Rungwa Ikili Game Reserve is a protected zone set aside exclusively for wildlife and protection of habitat from human encroachment; no people or villages inhabit the Rungwa ecosystem. Rungwa Ikili is best known for its exceptional lion, leopard, and trophy buffalo hunting, as well as the highly sought-after East-African antelope species such as roan, common sable, and oribi.
- 1,880 sq km (464,558 acres) in size
- The Makwasa camp is located on the bank of the Makwasa River and within walking distance of the well-maintained airstrip.
- Terrain in Ikili is generally miombo forest, open mbugas, and rolling hills. Ikili mountain - for which the area is named - offers year-round water from its underground springs, presenting excellent dry season hunting for all inhabitants of the area, especially lion, buffalo, and elephant.
- A very comfortable mobile fly-camp is sometimes utilized to allow for hunting the entirety of the long-narrow concession, creating less driving time to and from the main Makwasa base camp.
- Elephant are scattered throughout the Ikili concession as they travel in and out of neighboring Ruaha National Park.
