Hunting Areas & Camps
Selous Game Reserve, southeastern Tanzania
Three of the TWC hunting concessions are deep in the heart of the 17-million acre Selous Game Reserve, famous for its vast herds of buffalo, elephant, hippo, plains game, and of course the big cats. All of the hunting camps are located in some of the most remote, scenic, and game-rich areas in the Selous and are accessible only by air charter into well-maintained bush strips. There are no people or villages within the whole of the Selous, except the hunting camps and clients who are there on only a seasonal basis. The concessions and camps–MA1 (Madaba), LU4 (Luwego), and U3 (commonly referred to as the Rufiji camp) – produce some terrific dangerous game opportunities for four of the African Big Five, as well as some exciting action with hippo. Some of the monster crocs basking themselves on the banks of the rivers may have been around during the days of Frederick Courtney Selous, the famous hunter-naturalist in whose honor the Reserve was named!
MA1 (Madaba)
- 1,676 sq km (414,148 acres) in size.
- Best known as “Madaba,” this concession borders the U3 area to the south and is best known for high quality elephant and great numbers of buffalo as well as a multitude of plains game species.
- Camp is situated on the Madaba River.
- Advantage of the proximity to U3 is that big groups can hunt from the Madaba camp and utilize both areas, for a total hunting region of 2,448 sq km (604,913 acres).
U3 (Rufigi)
- 772 sq km (190,765 acres) in size.
- The mighty Rufiji River forms the northern boundary of this area to the east of the confluence of the Kilombero and Luwego rivers.
- Camp is situated on the sandy banks of the Rufiji river, providing spectacular wildlife viewing right from the dining table.
- This area boasts spectacular hunting opportunities for buffalo, hippo, and crocodile.
- Crocodile can be hunted from blinds over bait or where they sun themselves on the banks in the daytime.
- Nandanga Mountain lies within this area and is home to suni, red duiker, and a unique heavily-forested environment.
LU4 (Luwego)
- 371 sq km (91,676 acres) in size.
- The camp is situated on the banks of the Luwego River, further west of MA1 and U3.
- The Luwego river forms the eastern boundary of the LU4 concession.
- Like U3, the Luwego River offers excellent crocodile and hippo hunting.
- The terrain is more mountainous than U3 and MA1, offering great spot/stalk opportunities on the large variety of animals inhabiting the area.
